Funk Inc – Funk Inc (1971)

Personal Note: Debut album cut out on the West Coast of Berkley, California early spring of 1971. This was the first Funk Inc album that I bought and the one that introduced me to this great group after hearing “Kool Is Back“…Borrowed from “Kool & The Gang“. The album’s liner notes mention that the legendary “Grant Green” spoke highly of the band and when the demo reel was sent in to Prestige officials, There was a note attatched that read “recommended by Jack McDuff“. Good acid jazz with plenty of funk & soul.

Funk Inc – Chicken Lickin’ (1972)

Personal Note: 2nd drop from Funk Inc. for Prestige label. Very much in the same vein as the first album with a full on approach to jazzy soul laced with an ounce or two of funk. To me, I swear the band must have loved the great Stax RecordsIsaac Hayes” on the track “They Trying To Get Me” as the song’s dark tone & guitar licks sound identical to those found on Ike’s legendary Hot Buttered Soul album’s “Walk On By“. I also like what they did instrumentally for Sly Stone’sRunning Away“. Great album from this 5 pc!

Funk Inc – Hangin’ Out (1973)

Personal Note: 3rd drop from Funk Inc. on the Prestige label and more soul/jazz instrumentals. There is a very mellow and laid back vibe at times on this album as shown on their rendition of Curtis Mayfield’sGive Me Your Love“. The uptempo tunes “Smokin’ At Tiffany’s & I’ll Be Around” (Later respun by the Spinners) are also great testaments of the groups talent for soul/jazz.

Cookin’ On 3 Burners – BAKED, BROILED & FRIED (2007)
Personal Note: A three pc. combo representing the Funk/Acid Jazz genre with a strong emphasis on Hammond B3. Possessing a style quite close to that of The Meters, this group has been around with the best of the day’s funk revival outfits such as Tru Thought label’s “The Bamboos, Quantic Soul Orchestra & El Michel’s Affair” and deserve to have their name alongside the other greats in the same vein such as The Poets Of Rhythm, the Soul Fire label’s Calypso King & The Soul Investigators, and the Dap Tone label’s Lee Fields, The Sugarman 3 and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. The album is mostly instrumental with perfectly balanced, tightly executed gems that should be remembered for years to come. Support it please!
